Subsistence farmers' livelihood depends on rainfall.  With adequate rainfall, these farmers can produce just enough food to feed their families. Typically, from July to October, a rice paddy should be "flooded" with 3" to 6" of water in order to support a rice crop.  These paddies teem with fish, crab, tiny shrimp and frogs which are a major source of protein.

This picture was taken in the Romeas Hak district of Svay Rieng province on October 15, 2002.  Toward the end of a rainy season in which there has been inadequate rainfall, these rice plants are unable to produce a crop and are dying.  It is very disheartening for the farmers who own these paddies because they will have no other way to feed their families.
